Juror's Statement
I really enjoyed looking through the many wonderful photographs submitted in this exhibition and as always, with so many images, it does become hard to narrow down to the 30 or so for the exhibition. One criteria I focused on throughout the process of jurying this exhibition in order to help in my decision was whether or not the work was enhanced by the monochromatic qualities of the image. In other words, was a monochromatic vision better than say a color version of the image and did this contribute to ultimate message the artist was trying to get across to me, the viewer?
I could tell there were many artists experimenting with process, double-exposure, etc., that I found very provocative. The work I chose for the Juror’s Award successfully incorporated the literal and metaphorical dichotomy of ‘black and white’, and I love how the diptych played off itself, almost cinematically. In the Director’s Award choice, I was really drawn to the way the tonality of the monochromatic colors drew my eye in with the soft sun reflection on the water, while still being able to sharply engage with the rest of the photograph. It’s a lovely landscape.
Kudos to all those who entered, I was delighted to look through all the work, and narrowing or editing down to 30 images always entails editing out work that may be just as good, but just not fitting all the criteria for my selection. Thank you all for your submissions!
