Juror's Statement
Back in the mid-90s, teaching color photography in the winter in Maine with slide film was a challenge not just because it was cold or because those slower speed E6 films were unforgiving, but because the students and I had been looking at images from Cape Light and Bay/Sky and wondering where, during the shortest days in the far north covered with snow coated in ice, where would we find color?
And anyone who took this class knows that getting up at dawn for the first light was life-threatening in the coldest winter in history, but somehow, they did it. The time of day/type of light/mixed lighting/dusk/sodium vapor/fluorescent/sunrise/sunset/high noon/midnight/moonlight shoots happened and the pictures the students made were sublime. Rays of hope in a long season of darkness.
And jurying this show, Color + Space, for the Vermont PhotoPlace Gallery, brought me back to those days and that feeling. Perhaps that’s why I picked a snow scene for the juror’s choice award. The silence of those winter nights; the surprise of color in a colorless place. The wonder at how the eye sees and the camera renders. It was all new for me then and it felt new to me again jurying this show.
Images like the impossible sliver of a pink moon, a red tree on fire, a sunset house with a tiny string of white lights in the silhouette, so many amazing painted walls that I felt badly that I couldn’t include them all in the show, a neon DARK in the heart of a pitch black city, sunset tides ebbing, graphic arches and architectural forms illuminated by light and carved with shadows, a mirrored building reflecting the passing clouds—time stopped again and again, and with it my heart, my breath paused, pulse quickened, journeying through forests and urban landscapes alike, inside and then back out.
We offer special congratulations to Dave Jordano (Juror’s Award), Bonnie Bishop (Director’s Award), and Honorable Mention recipients Melina Meza, Nicolas St-Pierre, and Eric van den Brulle.
Jurying this show was a journey, and a pleasure. Congratulations to all the artists and thank you for sharing your work and your vision with me!

About the Juror
Ann M. Jastrab is the Executive Director at the Center for Photographic Art (CPA) in Carmel, California. CPA strives to advance photography through education, exhibition, and publication. These regional traditions—including mastery of craft, the concept of mentorship, and dedication to the photographic arts—evolved out of CPA's predecessor, the renowned Friends of Photography, established in 1967. While respecting these West Coast traditions, CPA is also at the vanguard of the future of photographic imagery.
Before joining CPA, Ann worked as the gallery director at RayKo Photo Center in San Francisco for 10 years until its closure in 2017. A dedicated champion of artists, she created a thriving artist-in-residence program at RayKo, where multiple residents went on to receive Guggenheim Fellowships. Ann also served as the gallery manager at Scott Nichols Gallery in San Francisco, where she integrated contemporary artists with the legends of photography.
Call for Entries
Color has the power to transform an image—to set a mood, evoke an emotion, or demand attention. In Color + Space, we invite photographers to explore the dynamic relationship between color and the spaces it inhabits. Whether expansive landscapes, intimate interiors, or abstract compositions, this exhibition seeks images where color interacts with space in compelling ways.
From bold, saturated hues that define a scene to subtle tonal shifts that shape atmosphere, color can be the unifying force within a photograph. We encourage submissions that showcase how color not only enhances composition but also influences depth, perspective, and perception. Whether vibrant or restrained, structured or organic, let color guide the viewer’s experience of space.
We are honored to have Ann Jastrab as juror for Color + Space. She will select up to 35 images in our Middlebury, Vermont Exhibition gallery and another 40 images for our Online Gallery. All 75 images will be reproduced in the exhibition catalog and remain permanently on our website, and be promoted on social media with links to photographers' URL.
Submission Fee: $39 for 5 images, $6 for each additional image
