PhotoPlace Gallery invites photographers and artists to submit work for Cyanotype: A Celebration of Process and Possibility, a juried exhibition celebrating the enduring appeal and remarkable versatility of the cyanotype process. Since its introduction in 1842, cyanotype has captivated artists with its distinctive blue tones, accessibility, and capacity for creative exploration. More than a historical photographic process, cyanotype continues to evolve through the hands of artists who embrace both its traditions and its potential for innovation.

This exhibition welcomes work that uses cyanotype as a primary foundation, whether as a standalone process or in combination with other photographic, printmaking, and mixed-media techniques. Traditional cyanotypes, photograms, digital negative prints, toned and wet cyanotypes, alternative substrates, and experimental approaches are all encouraged. Subject matter is open. We seek work that celebrates the breadth and creative possibilities of the cyanotype process, highlighting the many ways artists continue to engage with and expand this historic medium.

The exhibition will culminate with a special World Cyanotype Day celebration on September 26, 2026. PhotoPlace Gallery will host an additional reception along with cyanotype workshops and demonstrations, bringing artists and the community together to celebrate this historic and continually evolving process. Additional event details will be announced closer to the exhibition.

We are honored to have Sam Wang as juror for Cyanotype: A Celebration of Process and Possibility. He will select up to 35 images for exhibition in our Middlebury, Vermont gallery and another 40 images for our Online Gallery. All 75 images will be reproduced in the exhibition catalog, remain permanently on our website, and be promoted on social media with links to photographers' URLs.

Submission Fee: $39 for 5 images, $6 for each additional image

About the Juror

Sam Wang received an MFA in Photography from the University of Iowa in 1966. He then founded the photography program at Clemson University, where he taught for 40 years before retiring as Alumni Distinguished Professor. During a sabbatical in 2003, he taught at the Nanjing University of the Arts, where he began lecturing and exhibiting in China. Along with Zhong Jianming, a colleague from Nanjing, and former student Christina Z. Anderson, he coauthored Handcrafted: The Art and Practice of the Handmade Print, the first book to seriously address alternative photographic processes published in China. The book became a major catalyst for the development of the Chinese alternative process photography community.

Throughout his career, Sam has worked with many photographic processes, and his images have appeared in numerous publications. Cyanotype, however, has always remained his favorite because, as he says, “it’s so easy,” yet so difficult to fully control. He often compares the process to playing the piano: “It’s so easy. You just get a piano and push down on the keys, right?” His method of combining traditional cyanotype with Mike Ware’s New Cyanotype process was featured in Christina Z. Anderson’s book Cyanotype: The Blueprint in Contemporary Practice. He continues to explore the medium and create new work in South Carolina.
