Juror's Statement

It was an honor to curate "In Honor of Trees", and transformative to travel into these hallowed worlds. From delicate subtleties to dynamic exuberance in form or color, these interpretations offer a multitude of magical moments of tribute to the ubiquitous but invariably unique tree.

As a juror, I’m drawn to powerful compositions and images that resonate consistently with repeated viewings. I appreciate a variety of approaches and processes, and how successfully the chosen presentation works with the image. Alas, strong images that warranted inclusion were omitted with regret, and it was a further challenge to choose the award winners, as there were more than a few that merited honors.

The Juror’s Award image enveloped me in an atmosphere reminiscent of an old European storybook illustration. It’s a beautiful composition of a spectacular specimen, tinged with the delicate colors of time and season.

The Director’s Award goes to a hauntingly beautiful, tender, and hushed panoramic view with a whispered backdrop of trees.

Thank you for allowing me to revel in these elevated environments - bathed by light, mist, or snow, muted, or stark, close up or afar, reflected or reimagined. Each impression feels like a poignant prayer.

Call for Entries

In this exhibit we honor trees in all their states: majestic specimens or struggling seedlings, in summer plumage or winter austerity, grown in nature or nurtured by man.

Celebrate their contribution to the earth and their many benefits to humanity.  All capture methods and processes are welcome.

We are very pleased to have Wendi Schneider jury this exhibition. She will select up to 35 images for exhibition in our Middlebury, Vermont gallery, and 40 more for display in our Online Gallery. All 75 images will be featured on social media and displayed in the exhibit catalog.

About the Juror

Wendi Schneider is an American artist widely known for her ongoing series of hand gilded photographs – States of Grace. Drawn to the serenity and transcendence she finds in the sinuous elegance of organic forms, she creates illuminated impressions of vanishing beauty in the natural world. Layering color, texture, and gold leaf, Schneider’s process creates ephemeral illusions that seemingly dance on the paper’s surface amidst reflections of light on precious metals, creating a synthesis of technique and subject.

Schneider’s work is influenced by her collection of turn-of-the-twentieth-century art and objects, the lush landscapes of Memphis, New Orleans and New York, and a background in painting, art history, design, art direction and editorial and advertising photography. Her photographs are held in the permanent collections of The New Orleans Museum of Art, The Center for Creative Photography, The Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, and Auburn University Library Special Collections, among others. Schneider is represented by A Gallery for Fine Photography (New Orleans); Arnika Dawkins Gallery (Atlanta); Catherine Couturier Gallery (Houston), Etherton Gallery (Tucson). PhotoGraphic Gallery (San Miguel de Allende), Rick Wester Fine Art (New York); and Vision Gallery (Jerusalem), and is an active board member of the Colorado Photographic Arts Center.
