Juror's Statement
It's been a pleasure to review the submissions to this year's juried portrait exhibition at the PhotoPlace Gallery. I was struck repeatedly by the extraordinary variety and refreshing creativity of the work. There is a lot of talent represented here. Congratulations to everyone who participated.
— Juror: Frank H. Goodyear III
Associate Curator of Photography, The National Portrait Gallery
Call for Entries
From its earliest days, photography has been an ideal medium for portraiture. From early daguerreotypists to contemporary digital image makers, photographers have explored the way the camera can record (or subvert) the human likeness for expressive effect. For PERSONAL PORTRAITS PhotoPlace Gallery seeks portraits (self-portraits as well as portraits of others) that offer insight into contemporary approaches to portraiture.
We are honored that Frank Goodyear, Associate Curator of Photographs at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, served as the juror for this exhibition. He selected forty photos for exhibition at PhotoPlace Gallery from October 2nd through 27th, 2012. He also chose an additional thirty-five photos for the gallery's "Online Annex."
All selected work will be included in a full-color exhibition catalog available for purchase. To help artists defray costs, PhotoPlace Gallery offers to mat and frame work selected for exhibition free of charge, providing artists print their images to our pre-cut mat and frame sizes.
