Juror's Statement
I was honored to be invited to jury the PORTALS: Windows, Mirrors and Doors exhibition for PhotoPlace Gallery. It is always a challenge to edit all of the entries to a gallery-sized exhibit. I spent hours each day becoming familiar with the almost 2,000 entries before making my final selections. There was a wide range of styles and photographic processes. In the end, I chose to go for individual images that captured my attention each time I went through the entire collection.
My Jurors Award went to Antonio Pellicano for his image The Last Dance. I was drawn to the mysterious atmosphere that extends from inside the room through to the outside. It seems both dreamlike and realistic at the same time.
My ‘Director’s Award’ went to Carol Isaak for her image Walking Man. I’m intrigued by its unusual appearance - is the reflection from inside looking out or outside looking in.
It has been a great pleasure jurying the submissions and I thank you all for sharing your work with me. It was seen and admired.

Call for Entries
For our purposes, a portal can be an architectural feature (a gate, window, doorway, mirror, tunnel) that frames or isolates or adds dimension to an image. In a fictional sense, a portal can be a magical doorway through time and space. Alone or in combination, they hold unlimited creative possibilities for photographers.
For “Portals: Windows, Mirrors and Doors”, we're looking for images that use any or all these devices in intriguing ways. All capture methods and processes are welcome.
We are very pleased that Elizabeth Avedon will jury this exhibition. She will select 35 images for exhibition in our Middlebury, Vermont gallery and up to 40 more for our Online Gallery. All 75 images will be reproduced in the exhibition catalog.
