Juror's Statement

Although it isn't hard to become enamored with a culture that is different from our own, I believe that making compelling travel images is deceptively difficult. Good travel photography needs to transcend the obvious and invite the viewer into a new experience. It also needs to do more than simply show what a place looks like, but rather evoke what it feels like.

In making my selections, I was drawn to images that evoked a sense of place and in which there was a connection between photographer and subject. I was delighted to see many beautiful landscapes and scenic images, but most impressed with the faces I saw while curating this exhibit. Making images of strangers can be extremely challenging, especially as an outsider, and the images which made it into the exhibition show a mutual respect between the photographer and subject.

Congratulations to everyone whose images were chosen. And thank you to everyone who submitted to this exhibition. It was a pleasure taking a trip around the world through your eyes.

Call for Entries

Every place has its own smells, sounds, and ambience, whether amid the energy of a city or the serenity of a mountain lake.  Capturing the particular aura of a place and of those who inhabit it is the great challenge of travel photography. For Travel: Faces and Places, we especially seek photographs that capture the unique quality of a place or its people, whether across the world or in the next town. Tell us about the places you've been and the people you've met.

We are very pleased that Krista Rossow will be jurying and curating this exhibition. She will select approximately 35 images for exhibition in the gallery, and 35 for our Online Gallery Annex. The recipients of the Juror’s Award and the Director’s Award will each be entitled to a personal portfolio review by Ms. Rossow.
