Juror's Statement

As a working artist who interprets dreams into photographic visions, it was a great pleasure to review images from likeminded visionaries around the world.  I want to thank each individual who took a personal leap of faith and submitted to this call. It is never easy to ask another to consider your work and it was an honor to spend time visiting your unique world of dreams.  And once again, thank you to PhotoPlace Gallery for entrusting me to curate a show that is so close to my heart.

The greatest difficulty in selecting from such a comprehensive collection was to hone submissions to form the very best reflection of the theme.  This is a responsibility I take seriously as I too began my career submitting to group shows and know the hopes and disappointments connected to the process all too well. With that in mind, I spent an immense amount of time reviewing every image until I selected the final thirty-five exhibition and online images.

The Juror’s Award is presented to Laura Goin for her image Homecoming. I was hard pressed to select just one image from Ms. Goin as she submitted multiple images that were equally as exquisite. But with each pass, I returned to Homecoming, as it provides a perfect balance of unconscious beauty with a longing for a place we all yearn to return consciously and unconsciously. Whether that be a run through the fields outside one's childhood home or on a boat passing through an unknowable distant land, Ms. Goin takes us on a lucid journey that is unique to her own inner world while simultaneously being universal to all.

The Director’s Award is presented to Julie Beauchemin for her image The storm / La tempête. Ms. Beauchemin’s strange and marvelous world is one made directly from her own dreams of wonder. Playful and imaginative, her imagery leaps out from a magical reality most often found deep within the minds of children, but in this rare case extracted from a talent who is well in touch with a subconscious world adults long forget.

Honorable mentions go to Massimiliano Balo’, JP Gibson and Christopher Jordan for their exceptional dreamlike visions.

It is my hope that you will close your eyes, take a deep breath, then open your eyes and leap into this collection of personal dreamscapes and visions distinct to each creator’s inner worlds.

Photography can make visible scenes that never existed outside the photographer’s imagination, providing artists with the ability to share dreams, fabricate stories, and delve into self-reflection.
