Juror's Statement

Now, in our lifetime’s unprecedented period of environmental upheaval, our essential trees have become a symbol for much of which we are in danger of losing.

It was apparent in the submissions that many of us turn to nature for nurture - for grounding and spiritual connection, inspiration and appreciation. I’m inevitably drawn to images that exhibit a unique perspective and diversity in approach. Composition is key to what resonates with me, as is a lyrical use of color. I seek a balance between what is perceived and interpreted, and a lightness and deftness in touch if manipulated.

The awards were chosen for their magical and beautifully seen translations. They drew me deeply into their stunning, mysterious worlds.

The Juror’s Award recipient, Mist by Donald Schoenleber, feels like an exploration into an untouched, wilderness - a portrait of a moment of stillness, alive with new and old growth. Enveloped in a nourishing mist, this enchanting landscape is both nurtured and nurturing, a testament to what has been and what is to come, that perhaps instills hope for the future.

The Director’s Award recipient, Japanese Gardens in Fall at Lake Como by Polly Whitehorn, is an eloquent creation, judiciously layered to heighten the lushness and mystery of its exquisite composition. Dancing in and out of focus with limited depth of field or blurring, the elegant branches and leaves are partially lit and obscured, creating an effusive, billowing cloud of wonder.

I am grateful to each of you for allowing me to dwell in your beautifully rendered spaces, and to PhotoPlace Gallery for the honor of this bountiful task and the thoughtful donation to The National Forest Foundation.

Call for entries

As we continue to deplete forests and burn the Amazon in the face of increasing global warming, trees have never been more vital to our survival than they are today. Celebrate their existence and their beauty with your images of trees of all sizes and shapes, in all environments and seasons. All captures and processes are welcome.

Five percent (5%) of all submission fees will be donated to the National Forest Foundation, recipient of Charity Navigator‘s highest rating.

We are very pleased to have Wendi Schneider once again jury this exhibition. She will select up to 35 images for exhibition in our Middlebury, Vermont gallery, and 40 more for display in our Online Gallery. All 75 images will be featured on social media and displayed in the exhibit catalog.

About the Juror

Wendi Schneider is a Denver-based visual artist known for her ongoing series of hand-gilded photographs, States of Grace –– illuminated impressions of grace in the natural world. Drawn to the serenity she finds in the sinuous elegance of organic forms, she embraces photography to preserve vanishing moments of beauty in our vulnerable environment. Schneider has perfected a gilding process in which her images seemingly dance on the paper’s surface amidst reflections of light on precious metals, creating a synthesis of technique and subject.

Wendi Schneider's photographs are held in the permanent collections of the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Center for Creative Photography, the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, and Auburn University Library Special Collections, among others. She is represented by A Gallery for Fine Photography (New Orleans); Arnika Dawkins Gallery (Atlanta); Catherine Couturier Gallery (Houston), Galeria PhotoGraphic (San Miguel de Allende), Rick Wester Fine Art (New York City); and Vision Gallery (Jerusalem), and sits on the executive board of the Colorado Photographic Arts Center.
