Juror's Statement
We are naturally drawn to trees. They possess a character that inspires us and transcends their form. We see in trees symbols of life and renewal, resilience and steadfastness. We plant them in memoriam and decorate them for holidays. Stands of redwoods or tropical palms conjure entire places or sets of ideas. Trees embody both the innocence of nature as well as the forest primeval, from manicured branches in city parks to overgrown woodlands and twisted roots that push through concrete. For this exhibition, I sought photographs of trees in all their forms.
The photographs submitted to Trees: Life in the Slow Lane were as varied and diverse as the species that they depicted. Curating a show from the many wonderful photographs submitted was a daunting task. In making my selections, I was drawn to photographs that transcended their subject matter and portrayed trees as representing a mood, a personified object, or a statement about our changing environment. I sought to depict a variety of geographies and seasons and was interested in the impact of weather and time. It was also important to me that the selected imagery present a diversity of photographic styles and ideas. There is as saying that one cannot see the forest for the trees; that a person is too concerned with the details to look at the whole of a situation. When jurying this exhibition, I intentionally looked to create the show as a whole: seeing it as a forest made up of so many beautiful photographs of trees. I am very thankful to the PhotoPlace Gallery and the many artists who submitted their work for allowing me the opportunity to curate this beautiful and diverse forest.
About the Juror
Kat Kiernan is the Editor-in-Chief of the photography magazine Don’t Take Pictures, as well as the Director of Panopticon Gallery in Boston, Massachusetts. Her writings have appeared in numerous publications, most recently in the book The Artist as Culture Producer: Living and Sustaining a Creative Life (Intellect Books, 2017). Kat received the Griffin Museum of Photography’s Rising Star Award in 2015 for her contributions to the photographic community. Her photographs have been exhibited across the United States, and Photoboite Agency named her one of 2012’s 30 women photographers under the age of 30 to watch. Kat divides her time between Brooklyn, New York and Boston. She holds a BFA in photography from Lesley University College of Art and Design. Learn more about her work here.
Call for Entries
Trees provide essential needs for humans, survive in a vast range of environments, and often live for hundreds of years. Their long, slow and fascinating lives give us the opportunity to photograph them in all their shapes and sizes, all of their changes of season, all of the environments on which they grow. This exhibit is a celebration of the lives and diversity of trees. All capture methods and processes are welcome.
We are very pleased that Kat Kiernan will be jurying and curating this exhibition. She will select approximately 35 images for the Exhibition Gallery, and 35 for our Online Gallery. The recipients of the Juror’s Award and the Director’s Award will each be entitled to a personal portfolio review by Ms. Kiernan.
